Books

I love to read. There are a number of books that I’ve read which have shaped the way I approach my own marriage and my writing about marriage. All of the books on this page are ones that I highly recommend or which have been recommended to me. I hope you find them valuable.

When Work and Family Collide: Keeping Your Job from Cheating Your Family
by Andy Stanley

When I read this book, it was called Choosing to Cheat. I think the new title makes the theme a bit clearer. This is a short but amazingly insightful book that challenges us to look at what our priorities really are.

The 5 Love Languages Men’s Edition: The Secret to Love That Lasts
by Gary Chapman

This book does a fantastic job of breaking down what makes a person feel loved, how a person shows love to others, and how we can use these insights to improve our marriages, our parenting, and really every relationship in our lives.

The Good News About Marriage: Debunking Discouraging Myths about Marriage and Divorce
by Shaunti Feldhahn

This book is amazing! Every page has some new information about marriage and divorce statistics that is extremely encouraging. I even completely changed the tone of the posts on this blog largely because of its insights. The vast majority of marriages are successful, and this book includes the meticulous research to back up that good news. Highly recommended.

From This Day Forward: Five Commitments to Fail-Proof Your Marriage
by Craig and Amy Groeschel

There are a lot of great practical tips for strengthening your marriage in this book. My one criticism is that the author believes the “50% divorce rate” myth and presents his information in a “beat the odds” approach that, I think, can do more harm than good. Despite this, however, the book presents a lot of “lessons learned” and other practical advice on making sure your marriage stays strong.

The remaining books are ones I have not yet read but which were recommended to me through podcasts and YouVersion Bible Reading Plans. I’ll put a blurb by them and move them above the line as I read them.
